Artisan Plaster
Most are more familiar with the term ‘‘Venetian Plaster’’. But it’s grown to something more than that. If you do a quick Google search for ‘‘Venetian Plaster’’ you’ll see a wide variety of textures, sheens, and colors.
Originally developed to mimic seamless marble, Venetian Plaster has evolved into a versatile art form of its own. Modern building trends are changing and so is the trade. There are more and more ways to use this material to get a unique modern look.
Many of us remember when ‘‘faux finishing’’ or ‘‘faux painting’’ was the hottest thing since sliced bread—until, almost overnight, it went out of style, like we all collectively went keto and ditched it as fast as we had sponged it onto our walls. What most people didn’t realize was that those ‘‘faux’’ techniques were usually trying to mimic something from the world of authentic Venetian Plaster. Even now, paint companies push products claiming a ‘‘Venetian Plaster look,’’ but most are simply acrylic or latex knockoffs. They do this to sell an easy, mass-market version—something any DIYer or contractor can slap on after watching a 10-minute YouTube video. But in making it simple, they strip out the artistry, and that shortcut comes at the cost of the final look and feel.
Real lime-based Venetian Plaster is a natural product and takes a different skill set to apply. Even the same plaster can take on a completely new look just by using the trowel in a different way. And the real thing gives a look and feeling that has to be seen in person. Paint doesn’t compete with the real thing.
In short, those that use these materials and finishes in their designs recognize that the skill of the applicator is just as valuable—if not more so—than the product itself. These are not finishes that go from a catalog to a wall. These finishes are unique to each project, created through a process of conversation and collaboration.
