Artisan Plaster…

Most are more familiar with the term ‘Venetian Plaster’. But its grown to something more than that. If you do a quick Google search for ‘Venetian Plaster’ you see a wide variety if textures, sheens, and colors.

While Venetian Plaster was originally a way to create a seamless marble finish, it has grown to something else. Modern building trends are changing and so is the trade. There are more and more ways to use this material to get a unique modern look.

Many may remember a time when a thing called ‘faux finish’ or ‘faux painting’ was the coolest thing since sliced bread. But it quickly seemed like we culturally went keto and threw out those faux finishes as fast as we sponged them onto the walls. What many didn’t realize is that those ‘faux’ techniques were usually trying to mimic something in the world of authentic Venetian Plaster. Even now, many paint companies market products with a ‘Venetian Plaster Look’. Most of these products are acrylic or latex based imitations of the real thing. They do this to try to get out a product that everyone can use. Something simple enough that any DIY’er or contractor can read an info sheet and get it on the walls. They take the art out of it in order to create a product that can be used by the masses. The problem is that that simplicity comes at a cost to the final result and feel.

REAL lime based Venetian Plaster is a natural product and takes a different skill set to apply. Even the same plaster can take on a completely new look just by using the trowel in a different way. And the REAL thing gives a look and feeling that has to be seen in person. Paint just cant compete with the real thing.

In short, those that use these materials and finishes in their designs see the value in the artisan applicator as much, or more, as the product itself. These are not finishes that go from a catalog to a wall… these finishes can be unique to each project and each one is made through a conversation.

I am always trying new products, methods, techniques, and finishes in my studio.
